How ocean consolidation works

Less Than a Container Load (LCL) consolidation combines shipments from multiple customers in a shared container moving between consolidation and de-consolidation warehouses. This model can support just-in-time supply chains and reduce the need to hold unnecessary stock.

Why Incoterms matter

The article highlights a common issue with prepaid import LCL shipments from Asia under CFR or CIF terms: destination charges can be unexpectedly high. In some markets, the freight paid at origin may be quoted below the actual cost, with additional costs recovered from the consignee at destination.

Recommended checks before confirming a shipment

  • Identify the destination delivery agent and request a complete list of local charges.
  • Confirm the planned routing and port of discharge.
  • Make sure online tracking is available.
  • Compare the shipper’s prepaid offer with an EXW, FCA or FOB alternative from your logistics provider.

Unimasters offers maritime consolidation services to and from Bulgaria through Bulgarian, Greek, Romanian and North European ports, as well as faster intermodal rail LCL alternatives where suitable.
