What Steps Should You Take if Your Shipment Is Damaged During Transit?

What to do when transport damage is identified
Even with well-managed transportation, cargo can sometimes be damaged because of accidents, handling, insufficient securing or external conditions. A fast response and accurate documentation are important if a claim may follow.
Inspect the shipment immediately
Check the cargo before signing the CMR, waybill or delivery receipt. If damage is visible, record it in the transport documents and take clear photographs before unloading. Hidden damage discovered later should also be documented and reported promptly.
Prepare evidence
- Photos of the damaged goods and packaging
- A clear description of the damage
- CMR or waybill, invoice and packing list
- Any formal damage report prepared at delivery
Notify the carrier
Send the carrier or logistics provider a written notification as soon as possible, including the shipment reference, date the damage was discovered, supporting documents and the requested resolution.
Check insurance and liability
If cargo insurance applies, review the policy and notify the insurer as required. Carrier liability may be limited by contract or regulation, so the available compensation can depend on the transport mode, applicable rules and the weight or value of the damaged cargo.
